Protective Apparel Fact Sheet
For Biological Contamination

Concerned by recent events, many of our customers have requested information about the use of Kimberly-Clark protective apparel against the possible threat from anthrax.

Here are some facts the user may wish to consider when determining the appropriate personal protective equipment needed in these circumstances.

• • The Anthrax bacterium forms spores approximately 1.0 micrometer in diameter. Kimberly-Clark protective apparel has been tested for viral penetration (ASTM 1671 test procedure). The viral penetration testing indicates that Kimberly-Clark Kleenguard® Ultra, Repel®, HAZARD-GARD* I and HAZARD-GARD* II apparel provide an effective barrier against organisms up to 30 times smaller than 1.0 micrometer.
  • Additionally, Kleenguard® Ultra, Repel®, HAZARD-GARD* I and HAZARD-GARD* II film barrier materials provide 100% particulate barrier.
  • Kleenguard® Ultra, HAZARD-GARD* I and HAZARD-GARD* II are resistant to penetration from bleach, the chemical recommended for anthrax clean-up operations by the CDC (ASTM F903, procedure C). Repel®, HAZARD-GARD* I and HAZARD-GARD* II are also resistant to all ASTM F1001 chemicals including sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide.
  • HAZARD-GARD* I offers a 1.3 mil solid polyethylene film barrier. HAZARD-GARD* II offers a SARANEX 23P film barrier. These garments are available with upgraded seam barriers. HAZARD-GARD* I and II garments are available with bound seams and HAZARD-GARD* II with taped seams. HAZARD-GARD* II is available in both encapsulated and respirator suits for those customers requiring garments compatible with supplied air.

All of these coveralls are produced with the patented REFLEX® garment design, offering seams that are primarily on the back of the garment away from the frontal strike zone. A tape sealed storm flap covering the front zipper is standard on all these coveralls.

Kimberly-Clark has not tested its protective apparel specifically against the Anthrax bacterium and therefore cannot make any representation as to the effectiveness of its apparel for this use. The user is responsible for assessing the level of hazardous exposure and determining the appropriate personal protective equipment needed for each circumstance.
